Life Portrait
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Time: A few hours or so
Materials: Mechanical 0.5 or 0.7 pencil
Description: Drawing of numerous things that had some importance in life at the time. Top hat, shine, floating orb of light, question mark, paper falling, ripped paper, claws, eyes, balloons, poetry, love in chinese, bubbles, cat eyes ears nose, ‘bored’ written b a pencil, music notes, door, four leaf clover, ‘16’, clouds, dreams, clock, rain, teardrops, hand with fire flames coming out, teeth, mouth.
Artist Comments: At this point in my life, I decided to start drawing on blank white printer paper as opposed to notebook lined paper. I decided to draw things that had something to do with how I felt and my life instead of just random doodles that meant nothing. Only thing about this picture, is I think I should have combined them together instead of having them all separated. It's as if each object had nothing to do with another, where that was not true at all. Perhaps in the future, I can draw a better representation of my life, although my life might have changed by then, so the picture will look completely different.
Bumblebee Camero
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Time: Several hours over the course of several days
Materials: Mechanical 0.7 or 0.9 pencil
Description: Black and white pencil shading of the Bumblebee Chevy Camero from the movie Transformers. Two black racing stripes down the middle, perspective.
Artist’s Comments: After watching the Transformers movie, I figured that my favorite car would be the bumblebee camero. I decided to look up photos of it on the internet and found a few that I liked. So I practiced drawing it and then figured it was not proportioned correctly in some spots so I traced the parts my own drawing that were correct and filled in the rest. Then shaded it using the techniques I realized I was so good at. A lot of people seem to like this drawing, probably because they like transformers too. It's sort of a fan art.
Doors From Door
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Time: Several hours over the course of several days.
Materials: Mechanical 0.9 pencil
Description:A door opened with darkness inside it and six closed doors different sized doors coming out of it, leaving streaks in their paths from the main open door. The background is three different shades of dark gray, starting with the darkest nearest the main door and the lightest farthest away from the main door.
Artist’s Comments: I wanted to do something special and amazing and I had this idea about choices. After you make a choice, a million more choices appear. So I symbolized a door as a choice (to open, or to leave alone). When one door is opened, you get many more doors to choose from, whether to open or not. On later inspection of this piece, I think I should have added more doors that were closed to show the choices that weren't made.
Anime Eyes
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Time: An hour or two
Materials: Mechanical 0.7 or 0.9 pencil
Description: Thirteen pairs of anime eyes that are basically the same style, but drawn in different ways so that each has its own character and expression. Some look like cat eyes, some are more realistically human, and some are the typical anime eyes. Some have eyebrows which adds to the expression. Pencil, shading, black and white, shine mark, eye lashes, irises, pupil, face, feeling, emotion.
Artist's Comments: I wanted to learn how to draw people, but real life was too complicated at the time for a person who likes abstract drawing. So I stuck with anime, a simplistic form of people and figured I would learn how to draw people in due time. I started with eyes first because I heard that was the hardest part of the person and though I should master this before going to the whole person.
Teapot and Wineglass
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Materials: Mechanical 0.9 pencil
I was going to my grandma’s 80th birthday party and I was bored in the restaurant. I started to draw whatever was on the table that I figured I would be able to do. I don’t normally do still life because it’s somewhat more boring than creating something new that was never seen before, but I was already bored, so it was fine.
Ghost
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Materials: Mechanical 0.9 pencil
This used up two sticks of mechanical 0.9 pencil. It was a time where I felt invisible and started to relate to myself as a ghost. I also started thinking more about ghosts and their stereotype. An entity that is trapped between two worlds. Sometimes longing to go to one particular world, or searching for answers there.
Taking Over
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Materials: Mechanical 0.9 pencil
A dark force that is over taking a door. Somewhat represents a choice that is either being blocked or is obviously the wrong choice. It may mean other things as well.
Checker Warp 2
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Materials: Mechanical 0.9 pencil
This was all done using mechanical 0.9 pencil. Most people don’t believe me when I say this, but it is true. Also, I don’t normally time my work, but I know this took a long time to fill it in. I was bored and had lots of time so this is my time filler.
Elemental Yin Yang
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Materials: Crayola Colored Pencils
I started experimenting with Crayola Colored Pencils and it turned out well. I had experience with Crayola in 4th grade. I used to color lineart in rainbows that blended together. (Rainbow is not as bad as it sounds, my rainbow coloring won me 1st place in my city’s Youth Library Bookmark Coloring Contest.)
Snake and Orb
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Materials: Mechanical 0.9 pencil
I dreamed a strange dream and decided to make a story out of it. One of the things I added to my story (it was not in my dream) was a shelf of figurines. This was one of my ideas, and it was only a sketch to see if I could make it look a certain way. However, the head seemed a tad strange and cartoon-like. It is entertaining to see people try to follow the snake with their finger to see if it works. I assure you, it does.
Snake and Orb 2
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Materials: Mechanical 0.9 pencil
I somewhat improved and somewhat worsened in drawing the snake and orb figurine. I improved the head to look more realistic and I shaded it to look three-dimensional. However, since I was not tracing, I accidentally altered the body slightly so the snake now looks like it bends in fairly sharp angles and does not look as serpentine. It is entertaining to see people try to follow the snake with their finger to see if it works. I assure you, it does.
Snake and Orb 3
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Materials: Mechanical 0.9 pencil
Started to experiment more with shapes and orbs. I did more of these to practice with my shading. It is entertaining to see people try to follow the snake with their finger to see if it works. I assure you, it does.
Snake (Cobra) and Orb 4
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Materials: Mechanical 0.9 pencil
I wanted more practice and decided to make the head less boring, yet keep the body in its simplicity. It is entertaining to see people try to follow the snake with their finger to see if it works. I assure you, it does.
Snake and Orb 5
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Materials: Mechanical 0.9 pencil
Just another design that a snake would never hold an orb with, but it looks nice. It is entertaining to see people try to follow the snake with their finger to see if it works. I assure you, it does.
Loop
Date: High School Sophomore, 2008
Materials: Mechanical 0.9 pencil
This is one continuous loop. There is no beginning or end. If you have an hour or so to spare and want to occupy your mind, you can try to follow the loop around a few times.
