Design Dragon
Date: High School Senior, 2009-10
Time: Several hours
Materials: Scratch Art Canvas; Scraper
Description: A dragon floating above an open hand, facing palm up. The dragon has checkerboard patterns on its wings, following the contour lines. There is fire behind it. There are also lines coming out from the center of the page that have designs into each one. Black and gold are the colors of everything except the hand that is white and gray.
Artist’s Comments: In Art 2, the assignment was to find a picture of a person, and then cut the clothes out, so that you only glue the skin on the canvas. Then, we had to put designs on the clothes, following the lines of clothing so it looked three-dimensional. I’m not quite sure what the canvas is called, but it seems to be scratch art, where there is a layer of black on top of a layer of some metallic substance, and scratching the black off will reveal the metal beneath. Most people scratch too hard so the metal gets scratched too, but I scratched just so that it would reflect a little. I really did not feel like finding a person, so I just cut out a hand and did the designs (the main point of the assignment was to put patterns) in my own way. I did not draw the hand in this.
