Ultimate Chess
Date: College Fourth Year, August 2013
Time: About 32 hours (4 hours per day, one day per week, for 8 weeks)
Materials: Oil paint
Description: A three dimensional perspective painting of a field of lava with cliffs coming out of it in a square checkerboard pattern. White glass chess pieces are scattered on the left and black shiny chess pieces scattered on the right with one checker square per piece. Not all checker squares have pieces on them. A green blue and yellow smoky sky. Shading, lava, magma, molten, bright, hot, volcano, tactics, strategy, red, yellow, sides.
Artist Comments: I was thinking about checkers and that when I was little, the red squares were like lava that the checkers couldn’t go on. I also read up on chess to learn more about the pieces and ended up finding out that the pawns were actually different types of pieces, representing things like doctors or farmers. I originally thought of having some epic battlefield of people to represent the pieces all on a scene with lava and cliffs, but I ended up just sticking with chess pieces because I really enjoy their shape and color. I especially love the black pieces I did in this painting.
The white pieces were originally supposed to be solid color, but when I painted over the cliffs, they ended up looking somewhat transparent so I decided to let them look like glass pieces. The black pieces, however, look just like I envisioned them.
I was thinking of calling this ‘Heated Battle’ or ‘Heated Battlefield’, or maybe something to do with lava, but Ultimate Chess sounds more epic.
